Speaking of city taxes again !! Ouch is all I have to say. Posting a couple weeks ago, I wrote about how we in Calgary do have some of the lowest city taxes in metro cities in all of Canada and we don’t really have much to complain about.

Well, after spending some time on the topic and learning a little more about what is at hand here, I am a little pissed at how Calgarians are being treated. Certainly not discounting my initial argument of how low our taxes are - I am simply wanting to voice some concerns I have as a resident in this city.

Several people have made comments to a full audit of our cities expenditures. I fully agree. The municipal government books should be audited independently - on a regular basis. I see many city expenditures that are simply out of line and would like to see the fat trimmed before they start hiking up our taxes using fear mongering as a tactic. I say fear mongering simply because our municipal government’s number one cut will be from Emergency Services? Pardon me - but I can certainly see lots of fat that can be trimmed first.

This is not the first time our city council (or Mayor) has strong armed the public - taking aim at the west LRT expansion - he simply stated that the entire project will get axed if it does not get passed the way he wants it. Now the tax issue? The city is clearly stating that the citizens of Calgary are ignorant if we think that Emergency Services - among several other needed services in our city need to be cut before they build pedestrian bridges and clear the snow on non-essential side streets.

In our current economic situation - it is not just the citizens that need to be cutting back on frivolous spending - our government needs to as well, I am unable to see how so many non essential spending takes priority over our EMS?

An audit is definitely in need here.
