How to Deal With Spring Clean Up Waste
Spring is upon us and it's time to get your yard under control after the snow melts.
Though some of it can just be composted back into your yard, there can be branches or other organic puke that somehow appeared over the winter that is too big or not really ideal for the yard compost.
Do Not Send Organics to the Landfill
So what do you do with organic yard waste? Putting it out for the city of Calgary curb side collection is discouraged because when it goes to the landfill it actually does not decompose, it turns into liquid leachate and methane gas. (not good).
City of Calgary Composting Program
For a number of years, Calgary has been offering a city wide composting program. This is where you can bring your organic yard waste and drop it off at the landfill for composting.
Where Can I Drop Off My Yard Waste?
Any City of Calgary landfills will accept your organic yard waste. The rates can change but the last time I was there, it was $35.00 per tonne.
Taking things to the landfill is super easy too, they are very well organized. You simply drive in, they weigh your vehicle and tell you exactly where to go. You unload and upon exiting they re-weigh you and pay your $35.
What's In it for Me?
Not a whole lot - just some good Karma because you didn't just throw the waste to the curb side for pick up which then would turn into a toxic sludge.
