Rain Barrels and Composting Boxes
Every year the City of Calgary partners with Green Calgary to sell rain barrels and composting boxes at a discounted price. This is a great time to pick these up if you've considered utilizing them. Keep your eyes open for the advertising, usually early spring.
"Why should I have one?" you may be asking yourself.
Good question - here are a few reasons:
- You save money since rain water is free
- The plants benefit because rain water is chlorine free
- Rain water has natural elements that are removed by the city from tap water
- Helps take a little pressure off of the storm water system
They're Pretty Ugly
True - this specific on is. If you're looking for something a little nicer or a rain barrel that matches your yard decor, do some shopping around.
They are sold by companies like Lowes, Home Depot, Canadian Tire etc and are not entirely expensive.
Calgary is known for not having the best soil, by adding compost to it regularly really helps give it nutrients plants need. Also helps hold moisture and keep oxygen with the roots.
When composting, you do not necessarily need a composting box. I use a box, as well as an old wheel barrel that is not being used anymore. As long as you turn it on a regular basis, it will decompose. Another trick, when you find worms in your yard, toss them into the composter!
You can also at the end of your gardening season dig a hole in your garden and fill it with some of your garden waste. It will be almost fully decomposed by the time you're gardening again. You then simply work it into the garden.
**Pro Tip: Don't put anything with grease or fats in your compost bin or it will smell super gross **
