City of Calgary Service Fee Increases...oh oh...here is my opinion...

Once again our city is having discussions about fee hikes for services - seems (to me) like a redundant topic.
The issue being...fee hikes for services - water, waste removal etc...
After reading yesterday’s story on cfcn.ca (unable to find the article now?) informing the public of the proposed increases - there were close to 25 comments by readers expressing their concerns with these increases. Several explained our taxes are high enough and fees are too high already. Today’s news story  discusses this and again several comments are made regarding a disliking to paying the fees for garbage removal.
The reality is - we live in a very wasteful society. We waste water, the vast majority do not utilize any kind of recycling and even less compost. If one does not support the water fee increases - use less. There are plenty of ways to cut water consumption down - that does not cost you anything to implement. You can cut down on your waste by 50% or more by properly following the three "R’s" in recycling (Reduce, Re-use - then Recycle - yes, recycle is the last). Compost your veggie’s and yard garbage - it is a known fact that Calgary’s soil sucks - composting makes a very noticeable difference. Use energy saving light bulbs, turn your computers off when unused and so on.
I am not in favor of a flat out $4.00 increase - I would be strongly in favor of a pay per bag system - this way if you choose to be wasteful, you will pay for it. My family of four produces 1 medium sized bag of garbage per week. All the rest is re-used, recycled and composted.
One reason why the city is in such turmoil financially with waste management is because Calgarians throw everything away without thinking. If each household did their part, the cost would be greatly reduced - thus, the city would not be asking us for money. Not only that, recycling is another industry in itself and will create jobs. Hmmm...
I clearly have an opposing opinion to these readers.
Further - our property taxes are close to half of what other Canadians pay in other metro cities!  Not sure what can be argued there - we should be grateful.

Anyway - that’s my rant for the day...
